Meet your mentee, Yan.

Yan describes himself as happy, curious, talkative, and hardworking. He grew up in Manhattan and loves anything active or adventurous—hiking, biking, kayaking, swimming, and track & field. He plays tennis on Fridays, participates in NYPD Explorers every Saturday, and is part of Geek Squad, where he gets hands-on experience with technology. At school, he enjoys global history, info tech, and freshmen seminar, especially when teachers are engaging. His favorite club is Anime Club, and he’s currently watching Fire Force. He would like to earn a college degree and hopes to become a police officer one day because he wants to help people. He joined GCSA to meet new people, learn about college, gain guidance for his future, and feel supported in ways he doesn’t always get at home.

There are many natural connections between you and Yan. You both enjoy building relationships, asking questions, and learning about people’s interests and experiences. Yan’s love for physical activity and sports aligns with your background in running marathons and following a range of sports. His interest in technology, learning new skills, and joining community programs connects well with your experiences in volunteering, office-based problem-solving, and supporting young people. Most importantly, Yan is eager for guidance and meaningful connection, which aligns strongly with your passion for mentoring and making space for students to share who they really are.
